Shirt Feature #001 – SD Compostela 1995/96 Home Shirt

In 1994, minnows Compostela were promoted to the top flight of Spanish football after a third place league finish and a hard-fought playoff victory over Rayo Vallecano.

For this momentus season, equally small-time Spanish sports company Zico pulled one of the nicest La Liga designs of the 90s out the bag; perfectly balancing a sponsor / pattern colour palette and featuring fabric watermarking even Umbro would be jealous of.

Surprisingly to most, the team managed an impressive 10th place La Liga finish in the 1995/96 season; just 4 places behind Real Madrid – melting Catalan faces along the way with a victory over a Barcelona side bursting with talented players.

However revenge was swift and brutal – the following season Ronaldo scoring one of his all time greatest goals against a floundering Compostela defence… A goal immortalised in youtube edits across the years.

This aside, the team spent the season with mostly positive performances; entertaining fans with frequent goals from a striking partnership of Nigerian International Christopher Ohen and the Danish counter attacking specialist Bent β€œTurbo” Christensen (is there a more 90s nickname?). The Galacian side’s stay in the top flight lasted a total of 4 seasons, before the eventual downward trajectory into the Segunda Division – despite the general opinion the team were still playing exciting football.

The following years brought a descent just as meteoric as the team’s rise, seeing the side relegated to the 3rd division in 2001. They returned to Segunda Division the following season, but financial struggles meant players and staff were going unpaid for months; resulting in a ceremonious exit at the end of the year.

Like many brightly burning stars, their flame was extinguished when the club folded after the 2005/06 season, although reincarnated almost immediately – where they have since managed to climb back to the fourth tier of Spanish football.

Still, what a ride.
